Homeopathy

What is your definition of health? You might have to Google it because we talk about it all the time but you likely haven't thought of what it actually means. Many of us are focused on avoiding disease and avoiding those things which we know are bad for us. We all want to avoid pain. But the widest definition of health is so much more.

As simply put as possible, health means you have enough vitality to follow the path that was intended for you; so you can achieve your greatest potential. With successful homeopathic treatment you can also expect fewer illnesses and more easily resolved illnesses.

Homeopathy is a complete system of healing that was elucidated by Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago in Europe. Remedies are made from natural substances and are highly diluted and given in pill form most often. The homeopath seeks to understand the patient and the disharmony which gives rise to troublesome symptoms and then chooses a highly resonant remedy. It is the similitude that exists between the 2 patterns (patient and remedy) that stimulates the patient's own vitality and puts them on a path toward greater health. The "law of similars" was understood by Aristotle and Hippocrates and mentioned in ancient Hindu manuscripts long before Hahnemann gave us a map for practical application.

Today, homeopathy is practiced all over the world and its popularity increases every year. It is the second most widely used health system and practiced in 66 countries according the the World Health Organization. Currently it is recognized as a complete system of medicine or a medical specialty in the following countries: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, UK, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Belgium, Bulgaria, Hungary, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania and Russia. The national health care system integrates homeopathy (and pays for it) in the UK, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Mexico and Brazil.

Homeopathy's popularity is hard to ignore or downplay. Let's look at India as an example. From 1980 to 2010, India's newly registered homeopathic practitioners have more than doubled from 105,000 to 246,000. It is estimated there are 500,000 registered practitioners in total. The number of hospitals and dispensaries have increased four fold to 7,000 in the same time frame. The ministry of health in India estimates that 100 million citizens have never been treated with anything but homeopathy.

Many well known people around the world use (have used) homeopathy and have been advocates for it. Charles Darwin, David Beckham, Mahatma Gandhi, Dizzie Gillespie and Mark Twain, to name just a few, have spoken in support of homeopathy. The English Royal Family has been under homeopathic care since 1830. They have always had a Royal Homeopathic Doctor.

Many people do not know that before allopathic medicine gained support in North America, homeopathy was the main system of health care used. In the early 1900's there were 22 homeopathic medical schools, 100 homeopathic hospitals and over 1,000 homeopathic pharmacies in USA. Boston University, Stanford University and New York Medical College were among those educational institutions that were teaching homeopathy. It was a low cost and effective form of health care and it gained in popularity because of the rate of success in treatment during epidemics of the time. It slowly went by the wayside as deep pockets wanting to promote allopathic medicine sought to replace it.

There are many different approaches and ways of practicing homeopathy. Classical homeopaths, like myself, seek to find the simillimum or the essence remedy; the one that suits the whole person and the totality of symptoms. While I find it reasonably easy to match a good remedy, good outcomes are harder to achieve with increased suppression and use of drugs for example. Advanced illness is also a great challenge. Often many remedies are needed to peel away the obstacles to better health. Some improvements happen soon after a remedy is taken and others take much longer. And while some of the above may be drawbacks of a highly individualized treatment, people still seek it out. Sometimes patients who have tried everything else come as a last resort.

If you choose me as your homeopath, you are choosing to develop a deeper therapeutic relationship and one that I hope will help transform your health and your life.
